A Fat Man's Journey (Working my way back…)

An Attempt to Journey from Fat to Fit in a Lifetime. Eat right, Eat less, Move more

Audacious Plans

So a Thought Is Born.

This has been bouncing around my head for a while. Wondering, pondering, thinking, conceiving, discarding, reviving…

Today a thought formed in solid outlines…

Fragile X research and Autism research are two related causes that are close to my heart. As I have mentioned before, my older son Danny has Fragile X Syndrome. I won’t bore you with the details but the tie to Autism research is that Fragile X is the number one known genetic cause of Autism.

Research in to treatment for one will benefit the other. This is why I take part in the Ride For Autism each year here in New Jersey.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to put together a team to ride in the Ride For Autism. I am calling it Danny’s Team in honor of my son. I hope that we can put together 10-15 riders or more to take part and raise donations for the Ride For Autism charity. I haven’t set a financial goal yet but any amount is helpful.

My inspiration, my light, my love. Danny

My inspiration, my light, my love. Danny

While all this is good, ideas for something bigger have been bouncing around my head.

Today the ideas formed together and I know what I want to do.

The Grand THING.

I am going to put together a team of 4 to 6 riders and we are going to ride from Northern New Jersey to Miami, Florida. 1400 miles. The plan will be to get sponsors and ride 75-125 miles per day. The goal is to raise money for Fragile X research and raise awareness of the syndrome.

Why Miami? Why not? Looking at the map it just seems to make sense. If I can get ten companies to pledge just $1.00 a mile we would raise $14,000 dollars. That is just a quick blush and thought. As I said, the thought was born today after weeks of incubation. The plans will take much longer to pull together.

I have no idea how to do this but I have resources who will help and I know we can make it come together and make it happen.

Wish me luck as I pull this together.

There are few things that get my passion t rise the way the quest to find effective treatments for Fragile X does.

I hope you will join me in spirit and offer encouraging words as I work towards making this happen, perhaps as early as October of 2014.

  1. That’s a fantastic idea!! Good luck! If you set your mind to it you can totally do it 😀

  2. I think this is a great idea. If my math is right it would take about 14 days to do the ride and then you have to get back. Are you riding back? My daughter’s ex-boyfriend rode from the top of Africa (Egypt) all the way to South Africa and it took the team over 3 months. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Good luck.

  3. You can count on my support…emotional and financial! My brother is autistic, so it is a cause that’s important to me, too.
